Food Technology
Curriculum Intent
Food Technology contains elements of a wide range of subjects. It focuses on English for writing evaluations, discussion and reasoning. Maths is used to weigh measure and estimate timings, all of which are crucial in deciding the outcome of a product. Design and Technology is used for developing the student’s creative flair and design. PSHE is taught within the lesson when learning about the health benefits of eating certain foods. Students learn about food within different religions and cultures. The subjects also is heavily weighted in the scince of recipes and ingredients. We at Wixams have created a curriculum that is designed to create an understanding of portion sizes and costings of food and develop lifelong skills for the future of all pupils in how to feed themselves, healthily with the knowledge of what they are putting in their bodies. Knowing this is fuel and not just calories and have an understanding of where their food comes from.
The Impact- Pupils are taught the safety and hygiene rules of the working kitchen. There are steps to gain confidence and be more competent in the kitchen environment. Revisiting, consolidating and extending their knowledge and skills. The range of skills used within the working kitchen help pupils to create food for themselves and others to a high standard of hygiene and presentation. The skills taught use a different range of equipment such as blenders, steamers, mixers and food processors. All pupils are expected to partake in the activities within the kitchen; pupils are also expected to discuss, analyse and evaluate their work with peers and staff alike. The documentation is important as this encourages changes and developments to their product next time, they choose to make it again. The pupils understand the why, how and the use of evaluating their creations. All pupils, when entering the working kitchen for the first time, are obliged to follow an Introduction to cooking and the kitchen environment and we assess baseline their knowledge. KS3 pupils then follow a program that is designed to build more confidence in basic skills, broaden and extend. Trips will be offered within the school year to enhance understanding of the topic the pupils are following and inturn infuse passion. In KS4, pupils are offered to follow the AQA GCSE. The lessons are designed to engage and give varied lessons to Key Stage 3 students. With lesson topics linked directly to the GCSE specifications, the course is designed to help develop knowledge and understanding of key concepts, introduce important terminology and build practical food preparation and cooking skills while allowing them to experiment and explore – providing a solid foundation for the Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE.
A BTEC Home cooking skills Level One and Two qualifications is also available for those that are not at GCSE level. This is a rewarding program built on work pupils have previously completed throughout their time at school. There is an element of theory-based study when working towards this qualification.
