Media Studies
Curriculum Intent
We intend to deliver a Media Studies curriculum that enables all students to make excellent progress across thier study, leading to excellent outcomes and supporting a variety of further education options. Our curriculum will be a “joined-up” approach to Media Studies, emphasising the connections between topics (namely via the use of the theoretical framework to analyse different media forms and products), which encourages students to explore those links and enjoy the discovery of new ideas and their real life applications. The teaching of Media Studies will relate to the media world around them and current affairs. It will teach students to assess how they use media in their own lives and how to spot where it can have positive/negative impacts. They will be expected to study a broad selection of media products and to apply the theoretical framework to each of these appropriately.
Media Studies is a GCSE option and A Level subject. If studied at GCSE, it will include areas such as TV, music videos, magazines, radio, video games, advertising, news and film. The A level will continue with these topics, with a more detailed and analytical approach to a wider range of media texts. Both the GCSE and A Level course incorporate a practical element, allowing students to develop their use of technology and equipment by creating magazines, websites, music videos or TV documentaries. Media studies can lead to a wide range of futher education and careers that are flourishing in our current work climate. For instance, digital media, film/TV and web design are all crucial aspects of the course that could be applied to careers in this industry.
